Dragon Tears is an Acer palmatum Japanese maple that a is relatively new introduction. This variety, named for the interesting way the tiny new crimson leaves emerge, matures through the summer to a deep burgundy. Dragon tears is unique in that it grows horizontally like the Ryusen, and has a semi-pendulous habit like lace leaf varieties.
This Japanese maple cascades like a dissectum, but is not as wide. Its spring color is crimson red, turning burgundy red as the leaves mature. By summer's end the color changes to rusty red. Autumn leaf color is bright red. A "must have" for the collector.
Mature size after 10 years is 6 feet high by 6 feet wide. Hardy but needs shade in the afternoon in very hot climates. Best suited for zones 6-9.
