Suet cake is a fat-rich food source for wild birds. Providing this in addition to seed, helps birds get the needed energy for enduring frigid temperatures or seasonal migration. In 1958, Heath was the first to develop and offer suet cakes in addition to its feeders and houses. Heath’s suet cakes contain only the necessary, natural suet, seed and grains, nuts, and flavorings to attract various species of birds. Today, all suet products are still manufactured at in Coopersville, Michigan.

Feeding with suet cakes and seed cakes is quick and easy. Suet feeders and seed cake feeders are most often cages designed to offer a full surface area for birds. These simple feeders are great year-round, but especially convenient and effective in snowy weather. During the winter, natural food sources are scarce and it can become difficult to feed with mixed seed. Since this style typically lacks ample perching space, it is ideal for excluding larger birds. Suet feeders are highly attractive to woodpeckers, which often cling and use their tail for stability when they feed.
